Sue, Kemp, Kitza and the entire family,
Wow, what an amazing man and an amazing family. I was lucky to have known Lindy my entire life, literally. Although I was not related by blood, Lindy Pendergrass was so loved by my Dad (Mebane Durham), Mom (Bird Durham), Uncle (Coy Durham), and Aunt (Julia Durham), it simply felt like our families were one when I was growing up, especially with Kemp being the same age as me. From cookouts, dinners, hanging out, rebuilding the Mill House in Carrboro, to basketball games on that crazy deep and narrow rectangle court Lindy built at his house (Kemp had no choice but to be a great outside shooter!), it was like family with Lindy and Sue.
Kemp will forever be my best friend and brother in life. We had some unbelievably great times, still talk often, but boy did we make Lindy scratch his head a few times back in the day.
I know one thing, Kemp made him so proud. There was also a whole lot of laughter when we were all together.
Since my youth, Lindy helped make me (a middle class kid from Carrboro) feel like a million buck every time I was in his presence. It was just little things like his constant generosity, whether it was offering concession tickets so I could get into every Tar Heel Football home game (like season ticket holders), or as a teenager... helping me with traffic citation(s), or while in college... loaning his truck so Kemp and I could run our K&K Yardwork business during the summers, and I guess most importantly, offering important wisdom both verbally and by action, like... Doing the right thing, treat others with respect, don't make the same mistake twice, be reliable, be on time, quick wit, humor, incredible smarts, and quite simply an example of work ethic beyond compare. And let's just say, he also gave me sage advice on how to find the right girl, and it worked.
My heart goes out to Sue, my man Kemp, and Kitza, I know how much you deeply loved Lindy. I would also like to send condolences to the entire family and heartfelt thoughts to the Chapel Hill Police Department where he got his start, the Orange County Sheriff Department where he dedicated over 30 years of his law enforcement career when most would have retired, and the entire Orange County community that were touched by Lindy and understand just how amazing this man was to the community.
I love you Lindy and one thing is for sure, the memories and wisdom I harbor of you will never fade. Simply one of of the best men I have ever known... Ever.
Much Love,
Kelton Durham along with Terri, Charlie and Grace

I had the honor and privilege of working professionally with Lindy in the late 60s and early 70s while he was a detective and I was a chemist for the SBI. I worked with him often as he frequently visited the laboratory in Raleigh. I quickly learned that he was a serious, hard-working, dedicated investigator with unquestionable integrity. I always respected his hard work and integrity. Lindy will be greatly missed, not only for his numerous contributions but because he was such a good man. I extend my sincere condolences to all of his family and loved ones.

Sheriff Pendergrass was a determined man, and perfect for the job. He knew many people, including myself. I had some issues I was going through back in 1989. Lindy and Major Truelove made a visit at my house, After some conversation, he said that he didn’t think I had anything to worry about. That gave me some confidence. About one week later, I got salvation from the Lord.
I’m really going to miss that man; there won’t be anyone else like him, that touched so many lives and kept getting the job done, getting results!

While I haven’t talked to Mr. Pendergrass in several years, since I was young, he was always kind to me when I spoke with him. He worked with my grandfather and was friends with him. It is thanks to him that my father provided for me and my family. Hearing about his death saddens me, but I know for sure, if anyone was in gods hand, Mr. Pendergrass would be the first. My deepest and sincerest and deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Pendergrass.

Sheriff Pendergrass extended his hand in friendship when I came to Chapel Hill as Public Safety Director, and was a valued colleague throughout my service as Town Manager. He always was quick to respond to any call for assistance, was a dependable source for professional counsel, and kept his calm demeanor in all circumstances. I will always be grateful for his service to our community.
