Obituary of Adell Carden Howard

Mrs. Adell Carden Howard, wife of the late Jesse “JT” Howard, died Tuesday afternoon at her home, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Howard was born on June 13, 1924 at her home in Durham to the late James Luther and Ida Frances Brockwell Carden.  She was raised in Carrboro, where she worked in Laundry, the cotton mill, and the printing industry, including Creative Printers.  She was a long time and active member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Mrs. Howard is survived by her children, William Lawrence Howard, Sr., and his wife, Kathy, of Chapel Hill, Vernon Thomas Howard, of Chapel Hill, and John Wallace Howard, and his wife, Pat, of Pittsboro; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. 

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her brothers, Nello and James Buck Carden; her sisters, Gertie Carter, Clarene Parrish, Betty Maynor; grandson Barry Wayne Howard, daughter-in-law Edna Howard, and life-long friends Willie Mae Morgan and Ralph “Buddy” Neal. 

A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 2:00pm at Lighthouse Baptist Church, officiating was Rev. Mark Hall, Chaplain Steve Jordan and Rev. Bill Truesdale.  Burial followed in Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro. 

The family will received visitors Saturday evening, from 6-8pm in Walker’s Funeral Home, 120 W. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lighthouse Baptist Church, 12063 15-501 North, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27517.

The Howard family would like to thank the staff and doctors at the Pittsboro Piedmont Senior Center (PACE) for the excellent care and assistance during Adell’s declining health, as well as Linda Morrison for her phenomenal home health care.
