Chapel Hill, NC - Edwin Harrison Dixon, Jr. died Monday, April 30, 2018. Ed, the son of the late Elizabeth Sessoms and Edwin Harrison Dixon, lived most of his childhood in Charlotte and graduated from Walter Bickett High School in Monroe, NC.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1952 where he was in the Order of the Old Well  and a member of the Monogram Club through his participation in varsity cross country and track. Following graduation, he served in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the US Army before starting his lifelong career as a banker in Atlanta, Raleigh, Greenville, San Francisco and St. Petersburg, FL where he retired from SouthTrust Bank in 1995. He and his wife, Nancy, spent 2 years in Tashkent, Uzbekistan where he assisted bankers in learning free-market economy lending practices in the five former Soviet republics of Central Asia. Ed and Nancy retired to Chapel Hill after this adventure.

Wherever Ed lived, he was active in church and civic organizations. In Greenville, he joined the newly established Oakmont Baptist Church where he helped to lead 15 years of growth in the church. After retiring he participated in many activities of University Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. A constant for Ed was his active participation in civic life through the Jaycees, Rotary, Optimist and Kiwanis Clubs. With his trusty old Toyota truck, he delivered produce to many organizations through the St. Andrew’s Society gleaning program.

Ed and Nancy enjoyed 11 happy years at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill building many friendships with residents and staff. The family thanks the staff at the Pines for the wonderful care, love and attention they showed Ed and all of us in his final month.

Ed is survived by his wife, Nancy Head Dixon and his children:Ed Dixon III, his wife Tanya, and son, Brian Martinez; Mike Dixon; and Becky Morley, her husband Andrew, and their sons, Tom, Tyler and Cam. He is predeceased by his beloved sister, Dorothy Dixon Stilwell.

A memorial service will be held at University Methodist Church, Chapel Hill on Thursday, May 10 at 2:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the University Methodist Church Youth Music program, Habitat for Humanity or to the charity of one’s choice.
