I have just learned of Fred's passing. I sent him an email yesterday and then thought to Google him and learned of his passing. :( I loved him more than any other professor at UNC. He was always so kind and good to me. - Jamie Davis, Ph.D. - UNC '89 jamesdavisphd@yahoo.com

Today I got the letter of Fred Vogler's son Robert about the death of his father. I was in contact with Fred, because my wife and our children are related with him and we had a common interest in genealogy. Unfortunately, I never met him personally.
Our families are descended from Rudolff VOGLER and Anna Maria nee STRAUSS.
Robert, thank you very much for the copy of your fathers obituary.
We can sympathize with the loss, because my father died this year, too.
Our thoughts are with you ! God bless you !

Dear Mary Frances and Family,
It has been many years since husband David and I enjoyed your company at parties at then Janet Diaz's home. You were always so affable and pleasant--fun to be around. I then went to teach at NCSU and Janet ultimately to Texas Tech, but we always found in Fred a conscientious and caring colleague intent on good teaching and scholarship.
When I told Janet of Fred's passing, she asked that I also express condolences from her and her children, Julie ("Julita") and Paul.
They join us in wishing you comfort in Fred's long and well lived life and in the promise that you will, indeed, see him again.
Sincerely,
Jeanne and David Smoot
and Janet Diaz Perez and Children Paul and Julie

As the son of James B. Vogler, Jr and older brother of Robert Vogler, I just wanted to send my sincerest condolences and those of my family to the members of the Fred Vogler family. Although I only met Fred once, I feel as if I knew him from things my father told me. He helped my brother Bobby and so many others in so many ways. Every member of my family has a copy of the "Descendants of PC Vogler" to which he contributed heavily. We will be forever grateful to have had him as a member of the greater Vogler family. I live in Gainesville, Florida and regret that I was unable to attend the funeral. Bobby sent me a copy of the homily. The service was a fabulous tribute to a wonderful human being. Our thoughts are with you.

I remember him this way: a mind as sharp as a winter wind, but a soul as gentle and warm as spring in Chapel Hill. Fred Vogler helped me immeasurably while I was at UNC, and I am glad we stayed in touch as good friends long after I graduated. He was wonderfully thoughtful and kind, and had a fantastic sense of humor. He will be greatly missed, but I know he led a rich life, and am comforted by that thought. My sincere condolences to his family.

Fred welcomed us to the neighborhood in 1990 and was our good friend ever since. I have many fond memories of dinners and drinks with Fred over the years, especially our many valient attempts to stay awake past midnight on New Year's Eve. I know I am not alone in feeling that life in Chapel Hill without him won't be the same.

I am saddened to hear that Fred Vogler has left us for now. He was my favorite professor and advisor when I majored in French in the 1970's. As a result of his enthusiasm and at his recommendation, I spent my junior year abroad in Lyon. He served as my mentor and friend throughout the following years. With his gentle spirit and keen intellect, he had more impact on my university life than anyone else I have known. He was truly a gentleman and a scholar and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family as they adjust to this loss.

Frederick Vogler was my adult mentor for the Covenant Scholar program at UNC. I had not heard from him in quite some time, which was out of character for him. I thus Googled his name and found this site. I am so so sorry for your loss; he was a great man with a huge heart. He would take me to the Carolina Inn for lunch often, and tell me great stories about his college years, brag about his children, and regaled me with the tale on how he met his wife and the time they spent in Europe together. He was passionate, inspiring, helpful, and an all around pleasure. I hope his family is doing well in his absence, and God bless you.

Dear Mary Frances and family.....
To Fred
Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace.
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord,
At the eve of the day.
Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord,
At the end of the day.
Love in Him, to all of you, always...

I will always remember Fred Vogler most fondly. He was my 17th-century professor when I did my MA in French at UNC from 1992 to 1994, and he sat on my MA thesis committee. Besides this more formal side to our relationship, we shared many meals in downtown Chapel Hill or drinks at the house of his neighbor, Martini (RIP), or at the St. Patrick's Day parties in my apartment. He was a gentle soul and never spoke ill of anyone (even as I matriculated at a very difficult time for the department). I am a better French professor and human being today for having known Fred Vogler.

Professor Vogler taught one of my French courses during my undergrad years. Later, he was my general college advisor. I particularly recall his patient and pleasant manner. When I decided to take a year off from my studies -- I was not satisfied with my academic performance and lacked direction -- he supported my decision and assured me that I would be welcomed back. After returning better-motivated to complete my bachelor's degree, he sat on a board that awarded me a scholarship to spend a year in France after graduation. This certainly was one of the highlights of my academic career, and I am eternally grateful to Professor Vogler (and UNC) for that opportunity. I later introduced him to my wife, whom I had met on my scholarship year in France. Professor Vogler was such a positive, good person. I send my sincere condolences to his family. I am so sorry for the loss of Dr. Vogler in the lives of his family and for those of us who knew him at UNC-Chapel Hill. I met him when I joined Academic Advising years ago and soon learned that he was someone to go to for advice and someone who was an advocate for students at Carolina. Fred was on our list of faculty members that we trusted to send students in crisis when they needed faculty help, and he never failed to help until retirement. I was very fortunate to have known him.

How we will all miss Fred. I've known him since the 50s when he was a promising student and member of the Canturberry Club at the Chapel of the Cross. I was a young child (Fred was my some time babysitter!) when he was a regular visitor to our home. I don't think anything gave him as much joy as that of his beloved grandchildren. How his face beamed when talking about them or showing treasured photos of them. I'll miss his many fun stories about the past, his thoughtful selection of wine, and most of all, the kindness and devoted friendship he showed to my mother throughout his life. We miss you Fred.
