In 1960 I was a freshman at the University of Wisconsin when Kimball was a graduate teaching assistant for my English Composition class. I will never forget his kindness in helping me learn to love language and writing. I am turning 80 this year and almost every day I continue to be grateful to him for his gift to me.

Professor King was an influential person in my studies and life. When I was an undergraduate student as an English major at UNC-Chapel Hill he was my honors thesis advisor and teacher. I really loved the opportunity to work with Professor King for two semesters on the thesis. He was a fabulous professor and had a lot of wisdom to share about life and many subjects. I was very lucky to have the opportunity to study with Professor King. After I graduated we stayed in touch, and he always encouraged me in my endeavors. I send my best wishes and thoughts to Professor King’s family.

Kimball King was a fine teacher. He was very young when he taught me, but even then, he was an excellent professor; and, judging by the awards he won through his years of teaching, he only got better! He was particularly good at helping his students and inspiring them to pursue interests they had that emerged or were sharpened in his class. I had a 7:30 am summer school class with him and also met my future husband that summer so I was staying out late (back then I think the students could stay out until 10 pm on weekdays, but midnight or 1 am on weekends.) I'm almost certain we still had Saturday classes. I had every reason to miss class or to fall asleep in class, especially on Saturday morning, but Dr. King gave me every reason to stay awake. He was that good, and I respected him. The respect was mutual. In fact, he was always courteous to his students and seemed genuinely interested in us. Later, Dr. King was one of the readers on my dissertation, which was subsequently published. One of the key chapters of that dissertation and, really the seeds of my main thesis came out of the Modern Drama course he taught. As I said, he was good at helping his students to think and to allow their ideas to germinate and ultimately mature. I was privileged to have studied with him and I wish sincere condolences to his family. I received a BA (1987) and MA (1989) in English from UNC and took several classes with Dr. King. He was a great teacher and friend. I have never met a kinder man. I emailed him after I got married in 1996 to Katherine Kimball King. He got a kick out of that. He was universally beloved and leaves a rich legacy.

To Harriet, Scottow, Virginia and Caleb, I MUST say that Kimball was one of the most generous men I have ever known. He was generous with this time, his focus on whomever he was talking to, his thoughts, his advice, his genuine interest in people. EVERYONE knew what a saint, a legend, a person of immense stature he was.....yet Kimball always retained his common touch. He SHARED all of his immense talents with so many. He put himself out there when he was concerned about a situation in order to truly help. He shared any friend he had with me in the sense of contacts and introductions. To me, he was a friend with unconditional caring for our relationship and the life I live. We had talks with all kinds of depths in various subjects, travel locations, our high school / Lawrenceville, plays in New York and London, so many. He was of course a teaching legend ...and I cannot imagine the total number of students Kimball influenced with his courses. So many students had to wait in long lines to get into his course; Kimball would just let me sign up with him. He was a man I loved, respected, and deeply admired. He has a significant and life long influence on me. I will always remember his laughter and wit. Kimball was just one GREAT person. He will always be in my mind. Love to all of you. Elton

The man I’ve known since age one as Mr. King was fascinating, kind, a bit wicked, whimsical, erudite, always equiped with a good story, and devoted to his family. And he was débonnaire, never without a touch of elegance, and more than a touch, when more was called for. He chose a magical women to spend his life with, and they had lovely, impressive children. Like my friend Ginia, I grew up in Chapel Hill, and my father was in the English department. It’s a special kind of childhood, and it was a special kind of place. Mr. King gave me sustaining memories and contributed enormously to place, the University—Dramatic Arts, PlayMakes Repertory, English and his students. He must have touched so many other lives. Loss and grief are hard. I hope it’s some lasting comfort that, in this case, the family’s and loved ones’ pain most likely reflects a measure of happiness and love that will not, like grief, fade away.

So sorry to hear of Dr. King’s passing. He was such a kind and caring man. In 1984 I participated in the UNC study travel program. I severely sprained my ankle playing basketball and Dr. King spent hours several hours waiting with me in a London hospital for treatment. Will never forget that - this kindness epitomizes what he was and what he meant to all his students - such a delightful, rare and special person. God Bless his family.

Without Kimball, I'd never have read John Updike's Couples, or any Edward Albee. He came to our cocktail parties, treated us as equals, and was surely one of Walker Percy's Last Gentlemen. I'm a writer today, and I thank Dr. King for it. UNC '76

Dear Scott, Camille, Grace and Harriet, So sorry to learn of Kimball's passing. I only met him a few times but I remember him well and with much fondness. He lives on in all of you, both in DNA and things he's taught you and love he's shown you. And, as I know you all know, he lives on beyond this lifetime in eternity with God.
