While I did not know Dr. Battigelli personally, I work at West Virginia University in Occupational Medicine. Mario was the founding director of our Institute of Occupational Health, now a department in our School of Public Health. He very much laid the foundation for our current activities and is fondly remembered by our retired faculty Drs. John Pearson and Billy Carlton. Please know that we are very grateful for Dr. Battigelli's pioneering work here and that his legacy of service, training, and research in Occupational Health continues here thanks to his early work.

My deepest condolences to Mario's family and friends.
As noted in his Obituary Mario is one of the truly outstanding members of this community.
He was a really great mentor to me and other faculty and trainees during his time in our Division at UNC.
My family and I are going to miss this extraordinary man

This is an excerpt from Yiayia's Gazette vol. 14 No. 36 - September 29, 2019
"The streets of Briarcliff where I live are not the same for many years now. Papou in his long walks has “disappeared” and now since yesterday Mario too is going to be missed. He and Giovanna were regular passerbys – many times stopping for a short chat on our deck. How precious these times are now that we do not have them anymore. Do you suppose that somewhere in the Heavens Mario is now with Papou and the two of them take morning long walks? I love to contemplate the scene. Mario asks Papou for the translation of obscure Greek words and Papou finds excuses to say something about Nietzsche…Maybe Mr. Brown intervenes helping with the Greek words and arguing…
It is always very sad to lose a friend. I remember my father telling me toward the end of his long life how one by one he lost his friends and how lonely this can be. I see it happening all around me now more and more. Yet, when I think of Mario who left us I only keep thinking what a blessed life he has had. A brilliant career, a loving family with four children, (one better than the other,) and the most devoted wife anyone could have. What more can one ask from life? All the children were here at the end: a great consolation to their mother. Nothing will now be the same in that family. I feel for them. These last few days were painful to me and you can very well imagine why."

I am deeply saddened to see this news. Mario was my beloved neighbor around the corner. Such a caring and lovely gentleman. Such devotion to his beautiful wife and always asking about me. I will miss seeing him on his walks. Much love and sympathy to all of you. Jane Provan from 905 Grove St.

Sprung from the self-same Tuscan soil as the poet Dante Alighieri, and fellow-Florentine, Dr. Mario Battigelli was my friend of many years. He was a mind and a spirit to be reckoned with. Time spent with him in conversation was a very special privilege. A prodigious reader of science and the world’s best literature in several languages, his knowledge was encyclopedic, but never vaunted, and his kindness and concern for others legendary, as many will attest. I mourn his leaving.
