Dr. Antonio Cortés posted a condolence
Friday, February 1, 2013
Dear friends,
Please accept the heartfelt condolences of the Cortés Family on Cecil's passing. My mother, Consuelo, and aunt Riqui, who live together in Spain, wanted me to please extend their warmest sympathies. Diane and I also join in the sentiment from Albuquerque, New Mexico, where we now live.
Cecil was a caring and compassionate gentleman who dedicated his life to helping others. I admired him as a child and now greatly appreciate the fact that his character helped shape my own values in life. For those reasons he will always be a part of me. I feel extremely fortunate to have known him, and to have shared my childhood with Brent and Allison. Cecil's work at the UNC ROTC detachment is yet another link amongst us, since I graduated from that same detachment in 1990 and went on to serve in the Air Force, as Cecil had.
We wish you peace and send our love,
Antonio, Diane, Consuelo, Riqui

Hi Joan and family of Cecil Long --- I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Cecel at DUMC for many years, beginning in 1981 ending when I retired in 1994. I believe Cecil had already retired but was back at Duke in the Aging Center part time. I always admired Cecel for his intelligence about finances but more importantly, to me. his spiritual life. He was a Christian in all ways. I recall he was a certified lay speaker, taught Sunday School and he loved gospel music. My husband and I were fortunate to spend an evening at Joan and Cecil's house in Chapel Hill, what a pleasant time that was --- His death saddens me but I know Cecil and Joan are so aware who is in charge and accept Cecil truly is in a better place. I know in recent years, he had suffered a stroke, and was disabled --- Praise God for his life --- he made a difference to many. God Bless Joan and family. Audrey Norman

I worked with Cecil for many years at Duke. I can't think of anyone i admired more for the work he did for the Medical Center. He was a stong financial advocate for the Department of Psychiatry and for the Center for Aging. He was always delightful to be around, even though one had to listen to the virtues of UNC basketball.
He was a friend, and we have fond recollections of him.
May he rest in peace.

We were sorry to learn of Cecil's passing, but just as with my mother, you wouldn't wish them back from where they are now! God is good and the abiding faith that you have in Him will help you through the coming days and weeks. May your memories help bring you and your family much comfort as you walk in the Lord's continued blessings.

Cecil's gentle teasing humor and special smile will always make me smile in remembrance of the "old days" at the Center for Aging. Special thanks to Mrs. Long for helping us stay connected to him.

Cecil was a powerful servant of our Lord Jesus. I served on the 1973 Billy Graham Crusade Executive Committee with him, and he was a pillar. His long and deep influence on Chapel Hill and Orange County for the Gospel will be greatly missed.
Our prayers for the family.

Dear Joan and family, my sincerest condolences to you as you say goodbye to Cecil. He was a special Christian, friend, and superior at Duke Medical Center. We enjoyed so many happy conversations regarding the Lord, gospel quartets, the Assemblies, etc etc etc. I'll always remember him and the times I played the piano at Forest Grove. May the Lord comfort you and sustain you with HIS all-sufficient grace. You will be in my prayers and I know HE will be with you every moment as you commemorate his life: a stellar life.
Love in Christ,
Phyllis Thomas Immanuel
