Eleanor Lockamy Williams of Hillsborough, North Carolina died Sunday, March 1st following a brief illness. She was a very young 91.
Eleanor was born on August 16th, 1928 in Jacksonville, North Carolina to her parents, Guy and Gertrude Lockamy and a sister, Carolyn. She grew up near the coast and would love all things ocean for her entire life. She followed her sister to Meredith College in Raleigh, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. She would spend her career first as a music teacher and then as a 3rd, and 4th grade teacher in the public schools. She retired from McLeansville Elementary School in Guilford County. Though retired from schools, she would never retire from “teaching” and continued to view the world with the wonder of her students.
Eleanor married Reverend Thomas C. Williams on January 24, 1954 and served beside him at Antioch Baptist Church, Ca-Vel Baptist Church, and Sharpe Road Baptist Church until his retirement in 1990 to Hillsborough. Their love of and service to Christ and the church would be lifelong in whatever capacity they were called and able. She would enjoy services with Kyle at Crossroads Baptist Church near her home when she was not visiting.
Following her husband’s death in 1996, Eleanor spent much of her time helping with her grandsons. She was an avid supporter of all their activities that ranged from Harry Potter openings, choral concerts, and performances to football, wrestling, cross country, and lacrosse. In addition, she kept up with the activities of their friends and took a genuine interest in the lives of children and grandchildren of her own friends and family with excitement over each bit of news about them.
She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Joye and Greg Cordell of Chapel Hill; her son Kyle Williams of Hillsborough; grandsons Mason, Callum, and Keegan Cordell; nephew Dr. H. Leon Holleman (Stephanie), nieces Janet Warren (Mark Schmidt), Brenda Holleman, and Tina Snell; great nieces Jennifer Smith (Danny), Heather Althaus(T.J.), Caroline Holleman, and Austyn Holleman.
