Obituary of James Henry Diggs

James Henry Diggs (Jim) 3/7/1926 - 3/20/2020 age 94, residing in Chapel Hill, NC (native of Chatham County) passed away peacefully on March 20, 2020 at UNC Hospice in Pittsboro, NC.

Jim was born at home in Chatham County to his parents Charles Lewis Diggs and Ada Williams Diggs. His siblings Mary Ward Hunt, Katherine Staunton, Edith Page, and Ned Diggs all preceded him in death. He graduated from Bells High School before joining the Army Air Force where he met and married Norma Norton Diggs (deceased) from Sioux City, Iowa. They raised four sons on their chicken and tobacco farm, James Henry Diggs III, John Charles Diggs, Fred Edgar Diggs, and William Louis Diggs who brought four daughters home, Jo Anne Park Diggs, Barbara Reeves, Chris Yeager Diggs, and Catherine Jean Diggs. Seven grandchildren, Jamey Anne Croft, Evan Diggs (deceased), Brynn Diggs, Galen Diggs, Jonathan Diggs, Katherine Diggs, and Timothy Diggs. They also have two great-grandchildren, Riley Croft and Grayson Diggs.

Jim switched careers and entered the United States Post Office in Chapel Hill for the remainder of his working years. Additionally, he spent many years in the Grange, Eastern Star, Masons, Shriners (Chef’s Crew), Board-of-Directors for North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department and assisting the Chatham County Planning board to fill his retirement time as well as gardening and volunteering at Mt Carmel Baptist Church.

He and Norma also spent a number of years traveling in their motor home to enjoy our beautiful nation and visit family and do much genealogy research. They also square danced for years with the Square Heels Club of Chapel Hill.

A Memorial Service will be held at a day and time to be announced, and will be posted here.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations should be made for the construction of a columbarium at Mt Carmel cemetery.

The Diggs family is under the care of Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.
