Obituary of Ted Ellis Coleman

Ted Ellis Coleman, age 98, passed away on March 31, 2020 at The Addison of Indian Trail Assisted Living Facility at Monroe, NC, where he resided.
Ted was born November 19, 1921, in the Schley Community (Hurdle Mills, NC) to the late Ellis Young Coleman and Florence Wilson Kenion Coleman. He attended school at Schley and Hillsboro High School until grade 8. He farmed until he was drafted into the Army in 1944 and served as a medic until his honorable discharge in 1946. He worked in Washington state where he met his future wife Esther Marie Kots. He returned to NC and farmed. He and Esther of Iowa were married June 12, 1947. They moved to Minnesota to continue farming, then he also worked in machine shops until selling the farm and returning to NC. He then lived in Hillsborough and worked construction until retiring and living in Chatham County and Pilot Mountain. His wife died in 2008 after 61 years of marriage. He then attended Surry Community College taking Spanish until beginning another career as assistant in English as a Second Language classes. He also became active in Hospice in Mount Airy. He moved to Assisted Living in Mt. Airy where he resided until a fall resulted in a broken hip, which was repaired. He moved to assisted living in Monroe.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two sons Eric and James; siblings Fannie (Lizzie), Young, Jean, Opal, Hamby, Alonzo and Larry; brothers and sisters-in-law as well as nieces and nephews.
He is survived by children Ralph (Miriam) Coleman of Hurdle Mills; Ronald (Dee) Coleman of Midland, TX; Mary (Leon) Justesen of Cedar Grove, NC; Glen Coleman of Thomasville, NC; Florene (Tim) Miller of Charlotte, NC and Gene (Carla) Coleman of Hoschton, GA; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Goldie (Max) Bowman, Elgin, NE; Frances Coleman, Hillsborough, NC; brother-in-law George Headrick, Indianola, IA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service and burial will be held at the Coleman Family Cemetery.
