Justeen Bales Tarbet
1918 - 2013
Justeen Bales Tarbet passed away January 10, 2013, at Carolina Meadows Health Center at the age of 94 years. Justeen was born to William and Daisy Bales October 8, 1918, in Reynolds County, Missouri. She attended High School in Ellington, Mo., and Southeast Missouri State Teachers College (Southeast Mo. State University) in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
She married Donald G. Tarbet October 20, 1941. In 1952 they moved to Chapel Hill, N.C., when Donald joined the faculty of the Department of Education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he was ultimately Professor of Education and Dean of the Summer Session. They were married 54 years. Justeen was a loving, enthusiastic, helpful partner, supporting him in his position. She taught elementary school prior to her marriage and worked various office jobs through the years.
Justeen was a member of the University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. She belonged to the Garden Club (her passion was roses) and was a P.E.O. They belonged to the Chapel Hill Country Club and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and socializing with their many friends.
She is survived by a brother and three sisters: William Bales, Salem, Or., Norma Bales, Eugene, Or., Shirley Kuhlman, Federal Way, Wa., Evelyn Landsburg, Tigard, Or., 14 nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. Two sisters and a brother predeceased her.
She leaves a legacy of kindness and a gift of love to her family. A memorial service may be held at a later date.
