Mark Alan Moffet died after a short illness at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC on June 30, 2020. He was 56.
Mark was born on July 11, 1963 in St. Petersburg, FL to his parents, Donald and Sally Moffet. He graduated with high honors from the University of Michigan with a degree in psychology in 1985. During his undergraduate career he found his love for stand-up comedy. Mark began performing on stage at the student union at the urging of his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers. Mark was naturally funny and engaging quickly honing his craft and venturing out to local comedy clubs and opening for major comic acts of the day around the Midwest.
Alas, he went on to medical school, receiving his M.D. from Michigan State University in 1989. He frequently skipped classes to go on the road to tell jokes. Mark completed his psychiatric residency and child psychiatry fellowship at the University of Wisconsin in 1993. Mark loved to tell people that he graduated from the 22nd grade. While in his residency he met his future wife, Jerelyn Roberson. They married on September 25, 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. Mark’s pride and joy were his two sons, Samuel and Jack.
Following his training in child psychiatry, he remained on faculty at the University of Wisconsin. He was a patient and thoughtful physician. He remained on the UW faculty as the division chairman of child psychiatry through 2004 when the family relocated to Chapel Hill, NC. He joined a private child psychiatry practice in Cary, NC later returning to his roots of community mental health in 2011 as the medical director at Triumph health later becoming RHA in Burlington, NC where he practiced until he passed away. He thrived in his medical practice, mentoring new physicians and health care providers and serving in administrative rolls. While his stand up routine faded into the background of his medical practice and family life, his love and appreciation of a good laugh persisted until the end.
Mark is survived by his wife, Jerelyn Roberson Moffet, Chapel Hill, NC, his sons Samuel of Madison, WI and Jack of Chapel Hill, NC; his mother, Sally Hullsick Moffet; brothers Ken and Kerry (Pam) Moffet, all of California. He is preceded in death by his father, Donald Moffet.
