I met J.P. while I was doing graduate research in the Ramsey lab from 2016-2020. At first, I had a hard time understanding anything he said, mostly because I was new to the South and because he would speak "en sotto voce", in a rambling sort of way. After some time working together, I grew to understand how he expressed himself and his quick sense of humor.
I slowly realized he was always trying to provide support in any way he could and if he spoke, it was with purpose and a reserved kindness. Many times his way of helping was by providing insight and a clever joke. When approached for advice, he would listen thoughtfully, with a concerned expression; if he didn't have any to give at the time, it was clear that the issue would weigh on his mind, and he'd soon return with some suggestion or at least a follow up question to better understand the scenario.
J.P. clearly cared about the people he worked with. He was always helpful and kind to me, which I won't forget. I felt he was always rooting for me in his own way. Upon taking a leave of absence from grad school during the COVID pandemic, J.P. was the first to reach out to my personal email and check in with me to see how things were going. It was a small, but meaningful gesture.
Although J.P. was quiet and primarily seemed to thrive behind the scenes, he was also always ready for a group lunch or beer to chat with his buddies. He didn't share much personal information, however, I remember the time he took a vacation out West to receive rally car driving lessons. When he returned he animatedly told us all about it and answered our many questions with enthusiasm. He was partial to attending the Indy 500 and had a soft spot for talking about cars.
The Ramsey lab won't be the same without him. I suspect that those who are still attending lab group meetings will miss hearing his weekly recap and reminders, followed by watching him slowly doze off at the head of the conference room table in the afternoon sun.
Rest in peace.

We didn’t know us very much. I was 4 1/2 older than you. I spent 2 weeks in your family in 1977 and this is only space of time where we should have learned to know each other. .. but I was 18 years hold and you 13. You were quite lonely, mostly shy. I remember the treat at night. But we didn’t really spoke together... You may have laughed about my « chinese story »....I remember your mother and François did. I asked your father once about you: you were teaching quantic physic and living in North Carolina. It is very recently that I heard you had cancer. I would like to tell you more but I have nothing else to share. Mes condoléances à Yves, Andrée, Carol et vos proches. Nous nous reverrons à Montréal pour les funérailles.
I recently spoke with your father….He told me nobody were aware you had a woman in your life and a daughter! You are really a man of few words! You are my cousin and I love you! I share my sadness with Wendi, Caroline, Yves, Andrée, Carol and François. I expect you might gave a great party up there with Micheline, Jacqueline and my mom who joined you August 24 2021! Have fun!

We were so saddened to hear of the passing of J.P. Alarie. J.P. managed one of the most successful analytical chemistry labs in the country. Working with Mike Ramsey and his group, the contributions he made to analytical chemistry have had direct impact not only in science and technology but to our community at large. Most importantly, his legacy will live on through the multitude of students and postdocs that he helped teach and train. The department of chemistry at UNC Chapel Hill has lost a great colleague and our thoughts are with J.P.’s family and friends during this difficult time.
In Sympathy,
UNC Department of Chemistry

I will remember J.P. for his work ethic and his humor... for his encyclopedic knowledge of sports, his appreciation of classic cars, and his thoughtful point of view. He was a supportive colleague and friend. To his family and loved ones, please accept my deepest sympathy.

JP was a great mentor and a very kind man. I was privileged to work in the Ramsey lab under him as an undergrad not so long ago! He will surely be missed and I wish to send my condolences to his family.

JP was an integral part of the Ramsey group and kept it humming along through the years. He moved with the Ramsey team from Oak Ridge National Laboratory to set up shop at UNC. He was a hard worker, reliable and dependable, enthusiastic, someone whose quiet background work made the group function efficiently and safely. Staff members, grad students, and students sought him out to help solve problems, sometimes even personal problems. He became a friend to many. He organized outings to hockey and baseball games. He enjoyed weekly get-together craft beer nights with group members. His smile and quirky sense of humor were always on display. Even after he was diagnosed with cancer he maintained a remarkable positive attitude. He will be missed more than we can say. We offer our deepest condolences to his family.
You are gone to soon, JP!
