We lived on the third floor apartment facing the alley in the 600 West Block of Wrightwood in one of Mike Supera's buildings in Chicago. When we first met he worked in a paper mill as a laborer and painted, and I went to school and worked as a architectural draftsman. I met his brother and his parents once when they came to visit Balazs in Chicgo.
We were room mates, shared girlfriends and remained good friends untill the end of 1966. In early 1967 I went off to the war and came back in December. We moved to different duplex apartment located at 815 west Bell Plain and lived there untill Balazs decided to move to the West Coast, where he lived in LA and later in Hawai.
Balazs came to visit me and my family in Itasca, IL about 2006 or 2007 and brought me one of his Eye of Muse books.
Balazs and I did not always agree with his conservative political views, so we did not speak about politics often, but he did once tell me that he was diagnosed with cancer, but did not want people to know about it.
I was very sadened to hear that he had passed away in January of 2022, as I had very fond memories of my friend..

This is late. I just found out Balazs died. My name is Colette. I met your father through a common experience. Our Mynah bird stories. He found me and Kaleo on YouTube He and I shared many story’s through emails and talked on the phone. His last trip to Hawaii we’d hoped to connect but he had so many people to visit it was hard to fit it all in. I didn’t know him long or well but am so thankful for having known him the little I did. He left a huge impression on my life with who he was and with both his books. I lived with a family in France who’s father survived 2 years In Buchenwald. His story and Balazs story of escape from Hungary had many parallels. Your dad, Dominique, shared his life love sorrows and wisdom with the world. My heart goes out to you from his loss as well as the loss of your brother God Bless you Colette Harris Haleiwa Hawaii

The Storm King School sends condolences for the loss of Balazs. There are many words to describe Balazs, according to an article in the Fall 2018 issue of the school's On the Mountain magazine "...artist, author, poet, patriot; family man, father, philanthropist – the list is long. But as one looks into his bright, sparkling sky-blue eyes, one word stands out – resilience. Whether it was his idyllic childhood in Hungary shattered by a gripping escape from communist rule written about in his book Knock in the Night (2006); his journey to the United States in search of a new life; his school years including those at Storm King; or his struggles as an artist..." Balazs lived life with resilience and passion. Balazs has said that it was the close-knit friendships and sense of community, along with the academics and athletics, that set Storm King apart throughout his life. “We are lucky to be among the many branded by love, deep memories and laughter ... Even when we would meet again after many years, I recognized this trait in my friends from Storm King.”
As is customary, Balazs will be remembered at The Storm King School's Memorial Rock on Saturday, June 11, 2022 on Reunion Weekend. A link to the article about Balazs in the Fall 2018 issue of On the Mountain magazine may be found on page 6 here. His obituary may be found at https://sks.org/in-memoriam/
Note: The Storm King School has extra copies of Balazs' book Eye of the Muse (1986) with 106 color art plates, which was a recipient of the US Print Design Excellence Award. If you would like a copy, please contact lcrevling@sks.org or sfulton@sks.org.
