I first met Don in 1970 when he became my technician at the Fiber Industries Inc. (FII) R&D facility in Charlotte. We, of course, worked closely together but also became firm friends regularly playing golf with our FII cohorts.
In 1975 Don joined me at Goulston Technologies in Monroe as an R&D/Tech.Service chemist developing Fiber Lubricants., both domestic and internationally. At GTI we were given the opportunity to travel to many parts of the world and Don took to both domestic and international travel like a fish to water. He enjoyed meeting people and experiencing new cultures, especially the wide variety of foods. Don was well liked and respected both within Goulston and throughout the fiber industry for his technical know-how, easy manner and, of course, golf prowess.
He will be fondly remembered by everyone that knew him.

Susan and children. Sorry to hear of Don's passing. He was my first cousin on the Rector side. I remember when I was at NC State before he and Susan got married, Don would come to Raleigh and stay in my dorm room while visiting Susan. We played many rounds of golf together with his dad Clifton and brother Terry. Many in the family said he and I looked a lot alike but I think it was because of the mustache. This world has lost a great man. RIP Don.

I worked for Don as a Chemist at Goulston for several years starting in ~ 1988. Don was always willing to share his knowledge both related to textile chemistry and general life-lessons. Don instilled in me the importance of supporting our customers, lessons that I carry with me to this day, after 35 years at Goulston. Don had a nice and easy spirit about him that everyone appreciated, including me. When he visited Goulston after retirement he always made a point to look me up and have a conversation. He always expressed that he was proud of my accomplishments. So easy to do but so few people actually take the time to encourage others. It's hard to believe that I won't be seeing his smiling face again. To the family - I'm so very sorry for your loss. Don will be missed by many of his Goulston family as well.

Don was a unique individual and one whom I am honored to have been his friend for many decades! I am a better person for having had Don Helton in my life. I went to work out of college at Goulston in the R&D department, working with Don in 1981. Don had extreme patience, as he being a 1 or 2 golf handicap and me being "should not have ever been on a golf course" handicap, but Don would give me hundreds of suggestions; all sort of designed very caringly that maybe I should select another hobby. I did-fishing.
Don and I never lived close to each other, but we remained close friends, even after I changed careers in 2001. That is a real friend. Don would say that Goulston was just where we met, not where we could only be friends.
Up until his passing, we were sharing emails, and an occasional call, on every subject, mostly world events, several times a week! My heart, now like my email in box, is minus a very dear close friend!
Susan, Don Jr, Jenny, and families, Suzanne & I think of you often and pray that God will give you and all of us the strength to do what Don would expect-keep our fond memories but also keep moving on. God bless.

I worked for Don most of my career at Goulston. He was an excellent mentor, boss, friend, and golf tutor. He somehow managed to put up with my wearing Tarheel gear to work on a regular basis. I was hoping to let him know whether my son will be joining my daughter at NCSU (making it 2 to 1 against me) or will be attending UNC (making it 2 to 1 against her). I will miss his guidance and sense of humor. All my prayers go out to his family and friends.

I worked with Don at Goulston since 1985. My job responsibility involved international business. Coming from latin America at that time I had some difficulties understanding Don’s English obviously, but time and traveling together took care of that. He was a very good trip companion. He did enjoyed the world, probably because of seeds put in Don’s brain by his father working for a company with international customers. Don always enjoyed the experience of foreign food, the new places, the people, all these with an open mind and attitude.
Don was a good, honest person, very proud of his children and their achievements. He had a very good sense of humor. Great golfer, avid reader. I had the privilege of being one of his friends and learned from him not only tips on golf and reading recommendations but also the right attitude on life: never complain and enjoy it.

Don Helton was a great guy, an honorable man and an outstanding Mason. He was friendly and helpful to all. He lived the great values of Masonry and was an excellent teacher and coach. He was a respected source for questions about the NC Masonic Code and a good counselor and advisor for Masonic Lodge activities. He was an ever present instigator for positive change. As a Certified Lecturer he was so very helpful in guiding his lodges through forms and ceremonies, and his knowledge of the history and background of all things Masonic was invaluable. Additionally, he was a respected leader in at least three Masonic lodges (two in NC and one in Tennessee).
Don enjoyed all things related to aviation and would often share with his friends and brothers internet images and videos of challenging landings, takeoffs and flight conditions. He had a keen sense of humor and would also share humorous stories and insightful cartoons (I have gone back through his emails and re-read some of these and I am chuckling as I enjoy again Don’s wonderful sense of humor and attempt to honor him by these few words).
He will be missed by all, and especially missed by his family whom he loved so dearly. In addition, he will be sorely and especially missed by all of us who he touched in so many positive ways and with whom he maintained contact. Our entire community has benefited from the life he lived.

Donald was a generous mentor who, more than any other, prepared me to be Master of my lodge. I was so proud to be able to welcome him there. His generosity, precision, and humor will very much be missed by North Carolina Masons.
