Obituary of John William Cates, Jr.

     John William Cates Jr. “Shakeyp” passed away peacefully on July 6th, 2022 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital after a short illness.

     Johnny was born on July 30, 1948 in Durham, NC to his parents, Marie and William Cates, Sr.  He served as a Weapons Support Repairman in the United States Army from 1968-1971.  He married his wife Arlene in June of 2018. They shared many travels together.

     Johnny was a lifelong member of Hillsborough Presbyterian Church.  He loved to golf, fish the coast of North Carolina and play pool. He is survived by his wife Arlene Allison Cates of Trinity, NC; his sister, Jeanne Childers of Hillsborough, NC; and 5 bonus grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents, paternal and fraternal grandparents.

     Mr. Cates’ visitation will be held at Walker’s Funeral Home in Hillsborough on Monday, July 11th from 10:00-11:30 followed by services at 11:30 in the Chapel at Walker’s with burial at Town Cemetery in Hillsborough, NC.
