I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of a great mentor. As one of the pioneering CS grad students, I have fond memories of Dr. Brooks not only as a teacher (he personally taught about half the classes I had at UNC) but more importantly as a mentor and a Christian. He truly cared about his students and our young families. My young wife and I enjoyed Christmas parties at his home making paper ornaments for the tree, and appreciated his gifts and offers of assistance when our daughter was born. I found spiritual support in the Bible study lunches he organized in the department. But most especially I recall he met with me "until all hours" one evening counselling me as I struggled with my Christian walk, and introduced me to C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity.
Dr. Brooks taught us never to waste an opportunity. I remember travelling to D.C. just to hear him speak, because I knew it would be worth the trip--he would always have something to say worth hearing.
Later in my career, I was proud to introduce my students to "The Mythical Man Month", 20th anniversary edition.
My condolences and prayers for Nancy and his family.
