Obituary of J. Richard (Dick) Stewart

J Richard (Dick) Stewart, born May 7, 1936, in Clarksville Ohio, died on March 6, 2023, in Chapel Hill, NC. He was 86.

Richard was the son of HJ Stewart, a farmer, storeowner and Science teacher, and Viva Stewart, a first-grade teacher.

He attended the Ohio State University, where he received his BA in Physics and MA and PhD in Mathematics.

He married Sarah Kathryn Rood in 1963 and they had two children, Tatyana Kathryn (Stewart) Feeney and J Alexander Stewart.

Richard lived in Bisbee, AZ where he worked at Fort Huachuca and in Seattle, WA where he worked at Boeing. In 1970 he moved to Chapel Hill, where he worked for the UNC Biostatistics Lab and then for the UNC Highway Safety Research Centre where he stayed until his retirement in 2000.

He loved cycling, reading and everything to do with the natural world.

He was predeceased by his sister Peggy and his wife, Sarah. He is survived by his son, Alex Stewart of Chapel Hill, daughter, Tatyana Feeney, son-in-law, Niall Feeney and their two children, Fionn, and Juliet, all of Trim, Ireland.
