There are people in the world, who you meet entirely on accident, who soon become the dearest of friends. So, so incredibly lucky was I to meet and know Johnny Stokes one day. As luck would have it, it was about our mutual love of baseball...and that initial conversation lasted well more than an hour; we would have many over the years to follow. I would later meet his most beloved Tamsy, their son John, and all the staff they employed at their business. Johnny was the type of person who made you a better human, a kinder soul, and a more dedicated member of your community. To count Johnny Stokes as your friend was to be honored very much indeed.
If you look up the definition of 'life' in the dictionary, you'll read the description of Johnny...full of energy, curiosity, and commitment to improving the world around him. If you then turn to the definition of 'respect', you'll find him there, too...excellent manners and conversation, a gentleman of Southern manners and with a style of 'you are always welcome here'. And if you look up the definition of 'love'...well then you see Johnny and his lovely bride Tamsy; I can assure you he would not have it any other way. I marvelled at how well they knew each other and worked as a team so well, enjoyed hearing of their adventures together in different states and different jobs, and watched how they worshipped each other as husband and wife, and as partners in business. One thing that stands out to me now, as it did the very first time: when he spoke of her, he always smiled... and smiled big. Few of us will ever experience that kind of love and devotion.
Souls like Johnny Stokes don't come around often in life...you must treasure and remember them like the first sunny day of Spring against a Carolina blue sky. Johnny was, every day, what the rest of us aspire to be: open and trusting, hard-working, and devout to all those that he held dear. The warmth and friendship that the Stokes family has extended to me over the years can never be repaid; they have supported me in some of my most trying days. Like so many of us who know them, the Stokes treat us like family and we, in turn, them in the same way. Johnny may have left our physical world, but have no doubt: his warmth, his humility, and his loving spirit is something we all will forever carry with us.
My deepest condolences to Johnny's family and friends.

Working for Orbus Exhibit and Display Group since 2005 as the Southeast rep, afforded me many opportunities to visit John in the store. As a supplier, it was my job to ensure John had what he needed regarding our products and to consult with him as the market would shift from time to time. It did not take long after a few meetings with John to have a different motive for wanting to arrange a meeting. You see, John was one of the nicest men I had ever met; extremely genuine; and meeting with him always put a smile on my face as we shared far more than products over the years. I would always leave his store thinking how I wished more of my clients turned into friends like John did. This world is in desperate need of more John Stokes, Jr.'s!! He will be desperately missed! May the Kingdom of God welcome John now as John will undoubtedly add light to what is already a limitless lit up kingdom! May his legacy of kindness live on through his family.

John was one of the first people I met when I moved to North Carolina. He was a vendor sales rep to our company. I have always described him as the sales man who was a Friend instead of a Sales Man. One of my fondest memories is going to a UNC - Duke football game with John and some of my co-workers. All of us were UNC fans but unfortunately we lost that day. My husband and I also got to go see a Carolina Hornets game with John and Tamsy and had a wonderful time. It has been an honor to know such a kind soul.

My most sincere condolences to Mrs. Stokes and John. Mr. Stokes touched so many lives in such a positive and meaningful way. Even this shy woman who only knew you because of our shared love of all things UNC. I can never thank you enough for your generosity of your time, tickets, and fellowship. Thank you for sharing your experiences with me and countless others. You are so loved and missed.

It was an honor and a privilege to have met John and Tamsy and witness the love that they shared. John was a truly remarkable man and I enjoyed hearing stories of his childhood, his family and his career. John and Tamsy's trips to Colonial Williamsburg were always special, and the time that they spent in Colonial Williamsburg will always hold special memories, not just for Tamsy, but for all of us here in Colonial Williamsburg who had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know John.
Tamsy, may your memories of John bring you more and more smiles each day and less tears. The two of you had something very special and rare and it was a gift for everyone who was able to share in it.
My deepest condolences,
Trish Barner

I was lucky enough to have the privilege to grow up and see the love story that was Tamsy and Johnny my entire life. Johnny's kindness, love for Tamsy, John, Louise, and extended family was unmatched and never wavered. He always put Tamsy and John first, was one of the hardest workers I have ever seen, was always there for a good joke, and bled Carolina Blue. Some of my favorite conversations included just sitting in the living room discussing the upcoming basketball and football seasons, where we thought the teams would go, discussing lineups and coaching decisions, and predictions on post season play. While we lost a true light here on earth, I have no doubt here's up there dancing with Louise waiting for everyone else to join him. Everyone down here loves you Johnny and you will truly be missed. Tamsy and John, we all love you both very much.

So sorry to hear of John passing. Sincere condolences to Mrs Tamsy and family. I met John in the late 1970s when he was a salesman for Seaboard Foods. He was professional, courteous and hard working. Had the pleasure of working with him when he came over to work for Biggers Brothers/US Foods
Prayers to the family, Carl L Cuthbertson

My Dear Tamsy,
My heart is breaking as I think about the greatest love story I've been a witness to: Tamsy and Johnny.
I looked up the qualities that you want to look for in a man..I think Johnny was perfect and fit the bill.
He put Tamsy first
He was intelligent, witty and a good listener
He cherished Tamsy and John
He was a gentleman, honest and kind
He achieved his goals and ambitions with honor and integrity never forgetting the most important thing, his family
He treated others with kindness, respect and understanding.
He was humble and hopeful and always had a smile for you
He was an excellent leader and teacher, always looking for the good in people.
He was a wonderful father and friend to John
Of all the things he was, the greatest was love, love for Tamsy, his perfect companion, and John is son and name sake.
I feel so lucky to have been blessed to have known Johnny, to have loved Johnny, He will be missed.
Love you, Robin
