Obituary of Donald Warren Pope
Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donald Warren “Duck” Pope, born on April 10, 1937, discovered eternal life on March 11, 2023, at age eighty-five. His life ended the same way it began, surrounded by his closest loved ones at his forever home on his farm in Cedar Grove, North Carolina. Present were his surviving wife of 63 years, Faye Powell Pope, and five children, Donna Parker Davis, Doug Pope, David Pope, Dana Liner, and Dione Compton. His wife and children, along with their spouses, Donald’s eleven grandchildren, and his three great-grandchildren, will carry on his spirit for the rest of their lives. He has rejoined his parents, Charlie Bunn and Sallie Lee Pope, and four older siblings, Anne McDade, Bunn, Tom, and Howard Pope, all of Cedar Grove.
Donald was the youngest of his five siblings and spoke of them with reverence and affection till his dying days. He graduated from Aycock High School, but his real education occurred in its surrounding fields where he worked from his first steps until his retirement. In his youth, the need to care for his widowed mother and family farm tied him tight to home and started a life of unwavering commitments to the people and place he loved.
On February 6, 1960, Donald married Helen Faye Powell of Person County. Through their sixty-three years together, they personified the promises of their vows and built a home of limitless warmth, hospitality, and love on one of the most beautiful patches of land God could give us.
He was a man of immeasurable faith and attended Eno Presbyterian Church his entire life. His commitment to his community knew no boundaries. He founded Meadow View Farms, Pope’s Tire Service, Pope’s Insurance Agency, and co-owned D and D Cattle. He was a charter member of the Cedar Grove Ruritan Club, served on the Board of Directors at Hillsborough Savings Bank, and never missed an opportunity to service Cedar Grove and its sister communities throughout Orange County.
Donald’s loved ones will remember him as one who spent his life devoted to the people in his arms and land beneath his feet. He had hands of scratched leather, a steel spine, and a golden heart that leaves the lives of those around him in a better place because of his exemplary life.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, March 14 at 11:00 AM at Eno Presbyterian Church at 5409 Efland Cedar Grove Rd. A time of visitation and fellowship with the family will immediately follow at the Cedar Grove Ruritan Club. The graveside service will be for immediate family only.
Donations may be made to Cedar Grove Ruritan Club at PO Box 22, Cedar Grove, NC 27231 or AuthoraCare Alamance County Hospice at 914 Chapel Hill Rd. Burlington, NC 27215.
