Obituary of Mildred Shannon
Please share a memory of Mildred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mildred Cartrette Shannon, 92, of Raleigh, died April 15, 2023. Born in 1930 in Chadbourn, North Carolina, the oldest daughter to the late Arthur Lee and Edith Cartrette, Millie was predeceased by her siblings, James Allen (Myrtle), Hilda Strickland (Dewey), Arthur Lee Jr., and Mona Durham (Tommy). Survivors include her sister, Barbra Kinney (Jim), her son, Tim King (Cecelia), and two beloved grandchildren, Rufus and Sutton King, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Always a champion for the underdog, Millie stayed active in her communities wherever she lived. She started working for BellSouth at the age of 17, retired from there, and continued to work into her 70s. She loved classical music and served actively for many years as a volunteer for the Charlotte Symphony. Millie enjoyed good food, a hot cup of coffee, and sharing stories of her many off-the-path adventures around the world. A devoted grandmother, she adored children and held a special place in her heart for Scott (Jessica) and Adam (Kim) Strickland, the sons of Pam Lennex and Myron S. Strickland.
Services will be held at Duke Chapel in 2024. Millie gave in death as she gave in life. She was a full-body donor for the medical students of Duke. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Duke School of Medicine. The family would like to thank the Duke staff and personnel for the care given to Millie over the years.
