Please share a memory of Henry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Henry Sauber passed away peacefully in his sleep at The Glen at Willow Valley, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on May 13, 2023. He was 91. Henry is survived by his children Daniel Sauber, Emma Greer (Terry), Stephen Sauber and Virginia Kennedy. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Sarah Liptrap (Shane), Holly Sauber, Storm Rottmann (Mattie), Gary Rottmann, Jr, nephews Bruce and Ron Wetter, niece Lois Wetter Tilbury (Warren), and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Sol, wife Frances, sister Ruth Wetter, son-in-law Gary Rottmann Sr., and niece Eileen Shaw. Henry was born in Niagara Falls, New York, although he preferred to claim Jamestown, New York, as his childhood home. After graduating high school, he worked at Moore Business Forms. He spent four years in the Navy, where he met his future wife. They married in 1955. He attended University of Buffalo (now SUNY Buffalo) after leaving the Navy, earning a bachelor’s degree in Geography. The family moved to Maryland, settling in Hyattsville in 1959. Henry worked for the U.S. Geologic Survey, specializing in geographic names, for over 30 years. For a man who did not enjoy traveling, he had a vast knowledge of countries and their history, mostly learned through his passion for reading. Saturday afternoons were spent at the local library, where he could enjoy the peace of the periodicals room while his children searched for books on their own. He fostered a great love of reading in his children, and an appreciation of music. A piano player, he would spend time in the evenings and weekends playing classical pieces that he had learned by ear. He relocated to New Holland, Pennsylvania, in the mid-1980s and moved to a progressive retirement community in 1994. A service and burial for Henry will take place at 11am on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Salvation Army, one of his favorite charities.
