Obituary of Larry Wyatt Hayes

       Larry Hayes, 86, died at his home in Bahama on August 15, 2023.  He was born on November 6, 1936, in Durham to the late Joseph and Nora Hayes.

Larry attended Durham High School. He became a police officer in Durham in 1966, and he retired as a Staff Sergeant in 1991.  Larry was an avid sketcher, drawer, and painter.  He loved to work outside in his yard, building his wife as many flowerbeds as she could fill. Larry also enjoyed working with and building things from wood in his workshop.

Larry is survived by his daughter Pam Wilkins (Ricky Wilkins), and his son Jeff Hayes (Karen Hayes).  Larry has 6 grandchildren, Trace Wilkins, Skyler Wilkins, Mikaela Wilkins, Dustin Hayes, Derrick Cooper, and Kristen Cooper.  He has 3 great-grandchildren, Madison Stutts, Arya Hayes, and Presley Cooper.  Larry was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Alice Jane Hayes and grandson Dustin Cooper.

The Graveside Service will be held on Friday August 18, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Poole Family Cemetery on the corner of Leon Street and Duke Street in Durham, NC (right behind Ministerio Arbol De Vida at 2109 N. Duke Street). Pastor Eric Prenshaw will be officiating the service.
