Obituary of Emma Schuessler

Emma Schuessler (née Ihrig), died surrounded by caring people on August 5, 2023 at the age of 91 years old.

Emma is survived by her daughter, Andrea Hearn of Durham, NC and son-in law Randy Hearn of Sheffield, Alabama; her two grandchildren are Michael and Stephan Hearn; she has four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Heinrich and Josef.  Josef, her younger brother, died just 8 months prior and she missed him dearly.  They are now together again in heaven watching over us.

Emma was born on August 12, 1931 in Germany. She was the middle child between two brothers.  She grew up during WWII, with her father having died at an early age, and a mother who found herself taking care of three little children alone.

The circumstances of her environment made her a strong, hardworking, smart, and compassionate person. She lived every day to the fullest. With a beautiful and outgoing personality, she created close relationships throughout her life. She had a boisterous wit and could be heard from across the room keeping a group of people entertained with her charm and humor. When she was in the room, you knew it. Fiercely loyal to family and friends, she fought to protect them in all circumstances and never failed to be there when needed.

Emma was an avid rock & roll dancer, and later in life continued her passion for ballroom dancing on a weekly basis. 

She will be remembered as engaging and compassionate. Her determination and resilience showed us how to bring out the best in ourselves.

A memorial followed by the funeral is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.  on August 27, 2023 at Walkers Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.  Flowers and condolences can be sent to Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill NC .
