Charlie Raeford Davis

September 27, 1935-September 2, 2023

Charlie Raeford Davis of Carrboro, NC passed peacefully on September 2, 2023 at the age of 87 surrounded by his wife and children.  He was the third of nine children born to William Thomas Davis and Eliza Ellis Davis. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Cynthia Neal Davis; children, Patti Davis Wilkinson (Frank), Clay R. Davis, Joanie Davis Yeargan, Denise Davis Herndon (Eddie).  There are six grandchildren, Clinton Wilkinson (Devra), Megan Wilkinson Nichols, Chelsea Yeargan Painter (Kevin), Clayton Davis Jr. (Paige), Jesca Yeargan Evans, Dalton Herndon (Hayley).  The family includes nine great grandchildren, Cheyenne Watts, Lucas Nichols, Keith Painter, Sophia Wilkinson, Eliza Painter, Alice Painter, Colton Davis, Genevieve Wilkinson and Caden Evans; brother, Wren Davis and sisters, Lois Davis Hewitt and Sara Davis Wright.

He is proceeded in death by his parents and sibllngs, Marvin Davis, Eugene Davis, Billy Davis, Mary Davis, and Barbara Davis

Mr. Davis retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1987.  During his lifetime he was employed by Pacific Mills, Town of Carrboro and UNC-Chapel Hill.  He also served his community as a special police officer and volunteer firefighter for the Town of Carrboro.  He was beloved in his neighborhood where he and Cynthia lived and raised their children over the past 60 years.

His favorite hobbies were woodworking, hunting and fishing.  He was a simple family man who enjoyed all the grandkids and great-grandkids.  He was always making furniture, lamps or other items in his shop.  His family and friends have long been the beneficiaries of his loving creations.  Charlie will be remembered for his quick wit, brilliant smile, and willingness to help everyone.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of UNC Hospice for their care and kindness during this difficult time.

The family would also like to send a special thank you to Billy Blackwood for his friendship and dedication.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro, NC.  The family is receiving friends and relatives at the home.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the charity of your choice,
