Obituary of Willie Mae Harris

Willie Mae Harris died peacefully at Hock Family Pavilion on September 17, 2023, in Durham, North Carolina with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.

Mrs. Harris was born on December 2, 1939 in Orange County, NC to her parents Dorothy D. Haizelip and R. J. Haizelip.  She graduated from Hillsborough High School, attended Elon College and retired from Duke University Medical Center in 2005 after 35 years.  She had been an active member of Greystone Baptist Church prior to her long-term illness. Mrs. Harris was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who remained strong and positive despite facing many life challenges.

Surviving are her husband, William Harris, and daughter, Amy Ascher, and son-in-law, John Ascher; grandchildren, Avery, Benjamin, and Christopher; and sister, Gracie H. Wheeley; and 3 nieces and 2 nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; her brother, Rufus Haizelip; and her sister- and brother-in-law, Oscar (Jay) & Doris Joyner.

The family would like to thank the staff, nurses, and doctors at Hock Family Pavilion for their care and love of Willie Mae and the Harris Family.

Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, September 20 from 3 to 5 PM at Walker’s Funeral Home in Hillsborough, NC, followed by a service at 5 PM. A burial will be held at 11AM the following day at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery, 1721 Legion Road. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hock Family Pavilion to support their invaluable and dedicated service.
