Obituary of Marilyn Ruth Ascher

Marilyn L Ascher passed away at the SECU Jim and Betsy Bryan Hospice Home of UNC Health Care on Thursday, September 28, 2023. She was born in Rockingham County on January 13, 1948, to the late Maury F. Loftis and Alice Y. Loftis.

Marilyn was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who spent a lifetime helping others. She started her social work career working at UNC Home Health and talked about what an honor it was to serve people in their homes. She then moved to work at UNC Hospitals where she was the social worker helping patients admitted to the Trauma, Vascular and Geriatrics units. Marilyn retired from her all-time favorite assignment in the UNC Emergency Department in 2014. She was a beloved part of the team who was known for handing out little gifts to her co-workers on every holiday. Marilyn made many lasting friendships during her time at UNC Hospital.

Marilyn’s sweet and loving personality carried through to all areas of her life. She enjoyed celebrating and made sure her home was decorated for all of the holidays so that visitors could also enjoy. She would also check in with friends to ensure they too had put out their pumpkins for the fall and American flags for Memorial and Labor Day. Marilyn also decorated thoroughly for Christmas including many Christmas tress and lights throughout her home.

Marilyn’s greatest joy was having her family around her. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them and started planning weeks in advance for any visit. She treasured each moment and loved to show everyone the many, many pictures she collected and displayed around her home.

Marilyn was an avid Tarheel fan and would do all in her power not to miss a basketball game. She loved to call friends and family the day after any big game to make sure they too watched and if not, she would update them on all of the excitement.

Some of Marilyn’s most treasured times were spent with friends and neighbors who were a part of her extended family. She loved her visits with friends to Roaring Gap, helping friends prepare for Christmas parties, going on pottery tours and cocktails on the porch with her neighbors. Marilyn was known for keeping everyone and everything straight in her part of Fearrington. She was quick to help and cheer on those she loved.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.

Marilyn is survived by her sister, Nancy L. Crabtree and husband Reggie; nephew, Jason Busick, and wife Beth; Nephew, Justin Dill, and wife Shannon; Niece Julie Rhette; great nieces and nephews Jonah, Abigail, Madison, Carsyn and Jaxon; Close Cousins Betty Lynn Currin and Kay Porter. In addition to her parents, Marilyn was predeceased by her sister, Patsy Dill.
