Obituary of Doris Earle Huff

Doris Earle Ward Huff died at her home on Sunday, November 5th. She is predeceased by her parents Floy Manley Ward, and Katie Whitfield Ward; six siblings: Herman Hocutt Ward, Lucy Juanita Ward Caston, Erie Adolphus Ward, Ira Albert Ward, Jasper Paul Ward, and Edith Beryl Ward Lloyd,and her husband of 69 years Samuel Green Huff. She is survived by two children: Ronald Gregg Huff (Susan) and Donna Huff Harward (Steve); four grandsons: Shannon Greene Harward(Sara), Seth Derel Harward (Caitlin), Brandon Alben Lokey(Meridith), and Samuel Shelton Huff; and seven great grandchildren: Phoebe Elloree Harward, Asher Greene Harward, Sara Margaret Harward, Hattie Lyles Harward, Beau Duckworth Harward, Peyton Jade Lokey, and Stafford Hill Harward. She is also survived by her sisters in-law, Caroline Brunson Ward and Bernice Ward Huff, as well as ten cherished nieces and nephews.

After growing up on a farm just west of Chapel Hill, Doris attended the White Cross School and graduated from Chapel Hill High School. She later graduated from the University of North Carolina Women’s College and enjoyed a thirty-year career with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Admissions Office, the School of Education administrative office, the Consolidated Offices at Chapel Hill, and concluded her career as Director of the UNC Veterans’ Affairs Office.From 1954 until their retirement, Doris and Sam were faithful members of University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Upon retirement, they built a home in the White Cross community and returned to her home church, Antioch Baptist. Doris loved sports and was a life-long Tar Heel. She faithfully followed her Heels enjoying their successes and viewing their defeats as opportunities for growth.
