Obituary of Florence Ruel

Florence V. Ruel, a woman of strong faith and steadfast love, peacefully departed this world on July 1, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 93. Florence was predeceased by her husband, John Robert Ruel and her sister Margaret (Peggy) Melillo. She leaves behind her son Matthew Ruel, his wife Rachel, her daughter Laura Ruel, and her three beloved grandchildren—Amelia (Amy), Allison and John—and their spouses Vinny and Danielle. Her brother, Anthony (Tony) Vrola, as well as many family and friends, also mourn her passing.

Florence lived most of her life in New Jersey and Massachusetts and became a resident of Pittsboro, NC, eight years ago. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who prioritized the growth and development of her children. Her strong faith and fortitude were matched only by her compassion and love of the Lord. Florence was a member of the Newman Catholic Parish in Chapel Hill and had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother.

Florence’s talent for interior decorating and design transformed every space she and her family inhabited into places of warmth and beauty.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Thursday, July 11, at the Newman Center, UNC, Chapel Hill. Interment will take place the following week at Dover Cemetery in Dover, MA.

Florence requested that in lieu of flowers, donations in her honor be made to the Newman Catholic Student Center at UNC, Boston Catholic TV or the charity of your choice.
