Obituary of Ellen Sims Bivins

Ellen Sims Bivins, age 75, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024.  Born in Durham County, North Carolina, she was the youngest of five daughters born to Sidney Lawson Sims and WillerDean Hatcher Sims McKellar.  She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, John T. Bivins, Jr., her sisters, Jeanette Sims Dickey, Sidney Ann Sims Gattis and Linda Kay Sims Godfrey Hall.

Ellen was known for the love of her family and being a lover of animals.  She enjoyed reading books and she had many.  She dedicated decades working at the Social Security Administration.

Ellen is survived by her daughters, Kristy Martin Mizzi (Tony), Jennifer Martin Shambley, grandchildren, Stephen Lee Mizzi, Kelly Mizzi Bobotsiares (Andrew), Jessica Taylor Shambley, her sister Gayle Sims Henry (Marshall), two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a family memorial at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Duke Children’s Hospital Cancer Treatment Center.
