I am sending my love to Sallie and to Alan's sister Jean and brother-in-law Mike, and the whole Whitmore clan from another scientist who loves biology, genetics, microbiology, and viruses. I knew Alan when I was a graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill in the 1970s. In addition to being "Jean's brother Alan," I knew Alan as a kind and brilliant scientist who was always cheerful and interested in the latest findings in the lab. We went to seminars and shared professors and the love of scientific discovery. After finishing my PhD, I went off to other places, but came back to Chapel Hill often, checking in with Jean and my other UNC girlfriends. How wonderful his later escapades in rocketry sound, just like him. The world is smaller with Alan's passing, and larger due to his selfless contributions to our knowledge.
