Lt. Colonel Robert C. (Bob) Babcock
Lt. Colonel Robert Clayton Babcock of 213 North Churton Street, Hillsborough, North Carolina, passed away on April 20, 2012 in Marietta, GA. He was born in Oneida, New York on July 29, 1924 to the late Clayton F. and Margaret Matott Babcock. He grew up in Oswego, NY. Lt. Col. Babcock enlisted in the US Army Air Corp as a Private in December, 1942. He was later deployed to England and landed on Omaha Beach on June 24, 1944. In January 1945, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant of Infantry. After the war ended, and he stationed in Germany until January 1946 when he returned to the United States with the 84th Infantry Division.
He was released from active military duty on February 28, 1950 and enrolled at the University of North Carolina. He was recalled to active duty later in the year. During this tour of duty he served as the
Officer in Charge of the Alabama Korean War Dead Returnee Program. He was released from the Army on September 14, 1952 and returned to UNC where he graduated in June, 1954 with an AB degree in American History. Upon graduation he was hired by the Employment Security Commission of NC as an Employment Interviewer in the North Wilkesboro office and from that point on he was promoted to various higher level positions until his retirement from the agency's Central Office in Raleigh on December 1, 1985 after 33 years of credible service. During his employment, he remained active in the Army Reserves and retired as a Lt. Colonel. An avid Carolina supporter, he was a member of the Rams Club. Despite worsening health, he followed Carolina basketball closely throughout the 2012 NCAA tournament.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Gulick Babcock, of nearly 55 years of marriage on August 28, 2002, a brother, Leo J. Babcock Sr. of Oswego, NY, and a sister Doris Babcock Jennings of Oswego, NY and Elizabeth, NJ. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Babcock Williams and her husband John Williams of Marietta, GA, and his granddaughter, Jaclyn Williams, of Chapel Hill, NC. He is also survived by a sister, Georgeanne Babcock Conley, and brothers Henry O. Babcock and Francis H. Babcock, all of Oswego, NY, as well as many nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces and cousins. Survivors also include Bill Andrews and wife Bonnie of Durham, Nell Franklin Andrews, Patricia Andrews, Joe Andrews, and Susan A. Halkiotis and husband Stephen of Hillsborough.
Visitation at Walker Funeral Home, 204 North Churton Street, Hillsborough N.C. from 6:30PM to 8:30PM on Sunday, April 29. The service will be held at Walker's Funeral Home at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 30. Burial with military honors will follow at Hillsborough Town Cemetery, Hillsborough, NC. The family will receive friends and relatives immediately following the services. Details will be provided at a later date.
