Obituary of Robert Hilles Peck

Mr. Robert H. (Bob) Peck, 97, passed away February 4, 2012 at the DuBose Health Center in Chapel Hill. Bob was a native of Schenectady NY, but as a young man, traveled to Chapel Hill, NC to study engineering. He was a graduate of UNC, class of 1937, and a member of the last class in the School of Engineering on the Chapel Hill campus. After four years in the Army Air Corp. where he achieved the rank of Captain, he returned to Chapel Hill and UNC's Institute of Government where he earned a certificate of Public Administration. He served as City Manager of Mooresville, NC; Sanford, NC; Washington, NC and from 1961 to 1970 as Town Manager of Chapel Hill. He continued to live in Chapel Hill until his death. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Elizabeth; son Richard and wife Barbara, of Florence, AL; and granddaughters Catherine (Kip) Powell, Roswell GA; Nancy (Jeff) Bowling, Russellville, AL; Joanne (Charles) McClurg, Dalton GA; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son James R. Peck and daughter Jeanne E. Peck.
