Irene Caldwell was a fine woman. She was my Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority sister and my sister in Christ Jesus. When the Caldwells came to St. John's Missionary Baptist Church Irene came with many spiritual gifts; among them teaching, hospitality, and serving. She was creative, helpful and always positive, lending a strong hand to everything she was involved in. She was the Adult Women Sunday School Teacher and was well prepared each Sunday. When we went of annual Sunday School outings Irene came prepared to help and do whatevr needed to be done. She was the Proverbs 31 woman in the flesh! She was Mother of The Year by consensus. She was well respected and loved! She did so much for others that was heart is made glad to know that The Lord has prepared a place for her and welcomed her home, Irene was a loyal and faithful servant and I will always remember her as a model of Christ. I served as the Sunday School Superintendent for St. Johns' Missionary Baptist Church during the Caldwell years. Irene will always be remembered as Christian woman.

Irene Caldwell was an excellent Nurse Educator at the Durham Veteran Medical Center, where I was fortunate to meet her. She was kind, soft spoken and took the time to ensure what she taught was comprehended,
When she retired and visited our unit on 4B, she still inquired about my goals and shared insightful information.
I will miss her.
May God bless and keep her family during this time.
Sincerely,
Naomi Schofield, RN

Irene was one of the first people I met when I started at the VA hospital 21 years ago. She was teaching new nurse orientation and from the very first broad smile and the opening of "Well hello friends" you knew instantly that you would be her friend and she would be yours. What a lady! Love to her family. She will be so missed.

Irene was my Nursing Ed instructor when I joined the Durham VA family in 1972. Over the years she became my dear friend, counselor, mentor, and "Momma at work," and fellow UNC fan. We laughed together and cried together. I will never forget her. She was one of the most beloved and admired members of the Durham VA Nursing family.
