William G. Kern, Jr.
March 12, 1933 - May 26, 2013
William G. Kern, Jr. passed away on May 26, 2013, at the age of 80.
Born on March 12, 1933 in East Orange, New Jersey, he was the eldest son of William and Eleanor Kern. Bill graduated from Neptune High School in Neptune, NJ. He then traveled south to the land of fried catfish and sweet tea, graduating from the College of William and Mary with a degree in Mathematics. Bill ventured up north again, receiving his Master's Degree from Colgate University.
It was at Colgate that he met and married Nancy Engstrom and settled in Fair Haven, NJ. They had one daughter, Whitney. Bill was committed to working with young people, both as a basketball coach and beloved teacher of mathematics at Asbury Park High School and, subsequently, Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School for almost 40 years until his retirement in 1996. During this time, he received a reputation for his colorful clothing choices, off the cuff brain teasers, and unique quotations. He and Nancy were also well known for offering math questions to trick or treaters on Halloween (in addition to candy.)
Following retirement, they moved to Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, NC. He became a staple on the dog-walking circuit, socializing with everyone he met. Other interests included golf, cheering on college basketball teams, traveling and enjoying the company of everyone who crossed his path. Bill never knew a stranger.
Bill was a great husband, a great father, a great man and a great human being. He touched so many lives—some in the simplest of ways, some in the most profound. His joy, kind soul, vivaciousness and zest for life will truly be missed.
"Measure your life in love."
"Because I knew you, I have been changed for good."
He is survived by his daughter, Whitney. As per his wishes, no services will be held. Contributions can be made in his memory to Fearrington Cares: www.fearringtoncares.org.
