Wallace Maxwell Womble, 89, of Carrboro died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at home after an extended illness with family by his side. He was born January 24, 1924 to Robert A. Womble and Etta Thrift Womble in Carrboro, NC. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Ruth Poe Womble, his children Jerry Womble Carpenter (Ron) of Mt Pleasant, SC, Eddie Womble (Settle) of Carrboro, NC and Gina Womble Walker (David) of Chapel Hill, NC, his four grandchildren, Ron Carpenter, II (Joelle), Mary Hamlin Womble, Fletcher Womble Kieckbusch (Paul) and Wade Womble and one great grandchild Carp, his sister Nan Womble Carroll and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Wallace was one of the first employees hired at NC Memorial Hospital in 1952 as Purchasing Agent, later becoming Director of Housekeeping until 1968 when he left the hospital to serve his community in a career he loved as Manager and Funeral Director of Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill, NC. Wallace was active in the community where he was one of the first ambulance drivers providing emergency services in the area in the days when emergency transport was handled through the funeral home. He also worked with voter registration, played and umpired both school and recreational league baseball and softball, as well as participated on the church league dart ball team. He was a lifelong member of Carrboro United Methodist Church where he served on many boards, helped with fund raising activities and sang in the choir.
Wallace was preceded in death by his brother Robert Womble and sisters Elizabeth Womble Perry and Edna Womble Lloyd.
The family would like to express their deepest thanks and gratitude for the many years of medical care and friendship by Dr. James Bryan, to Mrs. Elizabeth Walker who gave him the opportunity to serve his community as Funeral Director, to Connie Matlock who has loved, supported and cared for him and the whole family for the past year and a half as well as the care, love and support by and the doctors, nurses and staff at the Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion Inpatient Facility.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 pm at Walker's Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Carrboro United Methodist Church.
