I had the chance to be hosted in Mister Bermel's house as a young exchange student from France 25 years ago. I'm truly sad to hear that he's gone, he was a good welcoming man and I keep very nice memories of him. All my thoughts go to his familiy and his son David in particular.

A few years back, David posted that he was looking for someone with whom he might play guitar. I answered that post, and we met at a coffee shop on Clay Street. We determined that we should to give it a go. We got together virtually every weekend since to work on a song – sometimes two – that David had written during the week. Over time, we discovered we had more in common than a shared appreciation of music. We began spending as much time “solving” the world’s problems as we did making music. We became great friends. I miss David tremendously.

In loving memory of David Bermel, I am deeply grateful for the support and understanding he always showed me. Our one-on-one conversations were insightful and filled with genuine care and accommodation. Sometimes, I fussed during our one-on-ones and drove him crazy when I would say, "Dave, why did you do that?" LOL LOL He often got a kick out of me rolling my eyes when we covered certain topics. LOL David was always understanding and respectful of my work-life balance. His support was deeply appreciated, and I will forever cherish the hilarious conversations about his poetry, music dreams, and love of painting. I have one of his paintings hanging in my home. He will be missed. There was no one like our Dave!

Dave
You were a true Renaissance man. So many different things you could do and do so well. I am the proud owner of one of your works of art on canvas. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy some of your home-made soup, watched and listened to you perform a couple of your songs. Vocals and guitar by Dave. I remember back in NY taking a hike with you and the boys thru the forest. You could identify every tree we walked by. Flowers, bushes, birds and critters! Everything we saw, you knew and told us what we were seeing and what was unique about each and every species.
So many things that did, always ready for the next thing to jump into. You were loved. We will miss you.

I have a memory of Dave in which his voice, and his good-natured manner, sticks in my head. A bunch of us readers were in the Bermel home on a Wednesday evening, as Eileen was hosting book club in their living room. We had had a discussion which went a bit long, and I was aware that both Eileen and Dave might be well ready for us to leave. As I began to collect my stuff, I heard Dave’s footsteps coming down the stairs, and winced a bit: let’s face it, the appearance of husbands, out from personal spaces so as not to interrupt or be interrupted as we talked books, was not always a good sign. But he relieved me of my concern and touched me with his spontaneous warmth. As I greeted Dave and made noises about going, he stopped me. “You are always welcome” he said firmly to me, “always welcome here.” I believed him. His simple kindness stays with me still, after all these years.
